Man Admits Robbing Secaucus Bank In 2017 At Gunpoint

SECAUCUS, NJ — An Iowa man admitted in federal court Wednesday to robbing a bank in Secaucus in January 2017, U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger announced.

He robbed the Bank of America in Harmon Meadow at 5 p.m. on Jan. 5, 2017. He was in possession of a handgun, but no one was injured during the incident, police said.

Jose Luis Martinez, 32, pleaded guilty in Newark federal court to a two-count indictment charging him with armed bank robbery and brandishing a firearm during a bank robbery.

Federal prosecutors say that on that date, Martinez walked into the bank and pointed a handgun at a bank employee while demanding cash. Martinez told the bank employee that he would shoot her and other customers if the employee did not comply. Martinez took cash from the bank and fled.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 31, 2022. He is facing up to 25 years in prison.
