Police Visit Baby Delivered At Lincoln Tunnel Entrance

The healthy baby boy was born at 8:52 a.m. this past Monday at the New Jersey entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel:

WEEHAWKEN, NJ — On Wednesday morning, the two Port Authority police officers who helped deliver a baby Monday outside the Lincoln Tunnel had the opportunity to visit the newborn and his parents in the hospital.

The Port Authority Police officers are Timothy Jozefczyk and Evan Butt.

The woman who delivered the baby is Maria Marin and the baby's father is Nestor Guallpa, both New Jersey residents. Newborn baby boy Kylian Aaron Guallpa Castano, weighing 6 pounds, 9 ounces, is doing well, as is his mother.

It was at 8:52 a.m. this past Monday when Port Authority police received a 911 call of a woman in labor at the New Jersey toll plaza to enter the Lincoln Tunnel.

According to a spokeswoman for the Port Authority, the couple was headed to a doctor's appointment in New York City and labor started. The baby came approximately three weeks early. The couple is engaged and this is their second child.

Jozefczyk was the first on scene.

"A very panicked driver told Officer Jozefczyk that his partner was in labor and that she was bleeding," said the Port Authority.

The baby was already crowning when he got there. The officer instructed mother Marin to keep pushing.

Within three minutes, a healthy baby boy was born.

Shortly after, Officer Butts arrived and he assisted in the delivery of the afterbirth and the clamping of the umbilical cord, as EMTs were not yet on scene.

The woman and her baby were transported to the hospital; NJ.com reports it was Hoboken University Medical Center and they remain there as of Wednesday.

“We are so happy that we got help from the police,” said Guallpa, the father. “We are so grateful that they were there and that everyone is healthy. Seeing the officers work carefully and knew what they were doing was amazing. They’re our heroes. It was like something out of a movie, and I will never forget this experience.”

According to the Port Authority, Jozefczyk has nine years on the job and he was very nervous when he showed up to the scene Monday morning. Not only was this his first time delivering a baby, Monday was actually the first time he had ever held a newborn.

“I was so relieved when the baby cried and so happy that everyone is healthy,” said Jozefczyk, who hopes to be a dad one day.

But Butts has prior experience as an EMT and in the FDNY; this was actually his fifth time in assisting in a newborn baby delivery.
