Secaucus Reminds Residents: You Cannot Rent Out Homes During The World Cup

Short-term rentals (AirB&B, VRBO) are strictly prohibited in Secaucus.

SECAUCUS, NJ — Even though Secaucus is listed as one of the ZIP codes that qualifies for a $750 reward from AirB&B if the property is listed before the FIFA World Cup, the town warns homeowners that short-term rentals are strictly prohibited.

The 2026 World Cup begins June 13 (first match is Brazil vs. Morocco) and ends July 19 at MetLife stadium. Airbnb — an official World Cup tournament sponsor — is offering a $750 cash bonus to new hosts who list an entire home in an eligible ZIP code, and complete a qualifying reservation by July 31. All the towns in Hudson County are eligible, including Secaucus (o7094), plus many towns around the stadium in Bergen and Essex counties.

However, the town of Secaucus posted to its Facebook page March 9 that short-term rentals (AirB&B, VRBO) are prohibited. If homeowners or renters are found to be advertising their homes on AirB&B and other sites, they will first be sent a warning letter from the town, and the town will then fine them. The town asks that neighbors who suspect this is happening report the homes to the Secaucus Construction Department at (201) 330-2027, and the town will send an inspector out.

In 2019, the town of Secaucus passed a town law that prohibits short-term rentals, which are defined as anyone who rents their home out for 30 days or less.

"There are only two houses right now that we know do it a lot (rent out on Air B&B). One is on the far end of 9th Street (near Clarendon School) and the other is on Millridge Road," Mayor Mike Gonnelli said at the time.

Secaucus Takes On Air B&B, May Fine Homeowners (2019)

World Cup matches will take place in 16 host cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico this June and July.

Secaucus, with its well-kept homes, extremely close proximity to New York City, MetLife stadium and lots of mass transit options, has the potential to become an Air B&B bonanza. When Secaucus passed that law in 2019, an AirB&B spokeswoman said the company would like "work with" Secaucus to allow AirB&B rentals in town.
