Secaucus Seeking A Supermarket
The places being explored for a possible supermarket are the soon-to-close Toys R Us and the PromGirl, which only has a short-term lease.

SECAUCUS, NJ — The town of Secaucus is indeed actively seeking a supermarket, Mayor Mike Gonnelli confirmed to Patch. The town council formed a committee to explore the possibility of bringing a supermarket to Secaucus, and that committee is made up of Gonnelli, Councilwoman Orietta Tringali and Councilman James Clancy.
While no supermarket has come forward with a proposal yet, the town would be accommodating with certain tax incentives, the mayor said.
The places being explored for a possible supermarket are the Toys R Us, which will go out of business this spring, and the PromGirl, which only has a short-term lease. Xchange is not seen as a viable option because there is not enough traffic there.

"We need a market here," said Gonnelli. "In my mind, it would ideally be a Whole Foods."
Gonnelli said he is also meeting Monday with a consultant who analyzes the market and would advise if Secaucus could sustain a grocery store, and if so, which one. He said the committee will also be talking to the owners of the Mill Creek Mall, the complex where Toys R Us/Prom Girl is located.

"We're really doing everything we can to make this happen," said Gonnelli.
Secaucus formerly had the Stop 'n Shop, which was located in the Mill Creek Mall, and before that, Acme, which used to be where the CVS is now.
Many residents in town have said they miss having a local supermarket.
Gonnelli acknowledged Walmart's presence is a deterrent to some grocery stores.
