SUV Drives Into Passaic River In Kearny, Driver Rescued

This happened at about 7 p.m. Monday; two Kearny firefighters rescued the driver from the rapidly sinking car.

KEARNY, NJ — A car drove into the Passaic River in Kearny Monday night and Kearny firefighters had to save the driver.

This happened at approximately 7 p.m. Monday, said the Kearny Fire Department: It is unknown how the SUV accidentally drove into the river, but one person, the driver, was trapped inside the sinking car.

Two Kearny career firefighters (trained as rescue swimmers) were deployed into the water using a ladder and they made contact with the driver, who was uninjured. The firefighters were able to pull the driver out via the rear window and pulled him or her up the riverbank.

The driver was evaluated by EMS and Moran Towing removed the vehicle.
