In 2018, the Helmetta Police Department was disbanded and the council approved a contract with the Spotswood Police Department for six years. Although the contact was not up, the two neighbors decided to open a discussion on the police service contract.

According to Slavicek, Spotswood Mayor Jackie Palmer noted the proposed significant increase in costs due to inflation and gas prices.
