3 Homes Entered Overnight While Residents Sleep in South Brunswick

There have been three overnight burglaries of occupied homes in the township this week, with the most recent reported Friday morning.

South Brunswick, NJ - There have been three overnight burglaries of occupied homes in the township this week, with the first reported last Saturday.

And all the break-ins happened while residents slept and left their doors unlocked, police said.

On Thursday a resident from Warren Court reported someone entered their home while they were sleeping and stole a wallet and a purse. The resident believes they left their garage door open overnight and the entry door from the garage into the home was unlocked.

Another incident was reported early Friday morning on Brook Drive West. In that incident, while the homeowners were sleeping the suspects entered through a rear first floor unlocked window and stole a pocketbook.

The Saturday break-in was on Barbara Street in Brunswick Acres development. The homeowner woke up Saturday morning and found a purse and wallet had been stolen from her kitchen. Sometime between 10 p.m. Friday when the residents went to sleep, and 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning, someone entered an unlocked rear sliding door and stole the items. It appears the suspect went onto the homeowners' back deck and rifled through the purse.

Close your garage doors at night, police say.

The homes have been spread out throughout the township, police said. In each case the suspect or suspects gain entry from an unlocked sliding glass door, open garage, or unsecured window. They steal items located on the first floor near the point of entry. None of the residents realized their homes had been entered until they woke up in the morning and attempted to locate the stolen items. Police remind residents to secure all doors and windows prior to going to sleep for the night. Close garage doors overnight. Garage burglaries are preventable crimes. While there isn't anything illegal about leaving garages open, doing so makes it very easy for criminals to steal valuable items and may grant unwanted access to your home.
