Abandoned Boat On Side Of Rt. 1: Driver Located, Summonses Issued

Mystery solved: You can't just leave a boat on the side of busy Rt. 1 without notifying law enforcement, South Brunswick police said.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — South Brunswick police found the man who they say left a boat on the side of Rt. 1 Thursday afternoon, and have issued him two summonses for the incident.

It turns out the 37-foot pleasure craft had recently been sold and was in the process of being transported from Mamaroneck, New York to Maryland by Otter Creek Marina and Boat Transportation. The truck transporting the boat experienced mechanical problems and its driver, Christopher White, 49, of Forrest Hills, Maryland, decided to off-load the boat on the shoulder of Rt. 1 at around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. He is charged with leaving the boat on the side of Rt. 1 near Beekman Road.

White left the boat on blocks and headed to Maryland to get a new trailer. White could not explain why he never notified police or any authorities about leaving the boat, according to South Brunswick police. It took local authorities five hours to remove the boat, as they had to call in a special trailer. Just after 8 p.m. Thursday, police were able to have the boat removed from the highway by Georges Garage and Towing. However, that was not before the incident caused one minor car crash from drivers watching the boat as it sat by the highway.
