Inaugural 5K In North Brunswick To Honor Son Of Judge Salas

The "Love is Light" 5K hopes to create advocacy around national legislation protecting the privacy and security of judiciary members.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — On July 19, 2020 District Judge Esther Salas and husband Mark Anderl lost their only son Daniel Anderl, 20, to a gunman.

Daniel gave his life to protect his parents after the shooter, an anti-feminist lawyer named Roy Den Hollander, opened fire at the family’s North Brunswick home.

To commemorate the one-year anniversary of Daniel’s death, his friends from school and North Brunswick community have organized the first “Love is Light” 5K run/walk.

The event not only honors Daniels’s sacrifice, but organizers hope to create advocacy around national legislation that protects the privacy and security of judiciary members.

In November last year, Gov. Phil Murphy signed ‘Daniel’s Law’ protecting the home addresses and telephone numbers of judges, prosecutors, and law enforcement officers from public disclosure.

Proceeds from the event will be used to create an academic scholarship at Daniel’s alma mater, St. Joseph High School, Metuchen.

The Daniel Anderl Memorial Scholarship Fund hopes to reach the initial goal of $100,000 which will provide for an annual academic award in Daniel’s name.

The “Love is Light” 5K run/walk is scheduled for July 17, at North Brunswick Community Park.

The walk/run will also be held virtual for those who cannot join. Registration fees for adults is $35. Students and those who are 12 and under can sign up for $25. For more information, click here.
