Monroe Twp.: 2 People Exposed To Rabid Raccoon

On Sunday, April 7 a resident in the area of Federal Road and Perrineville Road noticed a sickly raccoon wandered into their yard.

MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ — Two people were exposed this past Sunday when a rabid raccoon was found in a resident's backyard in Monroe Township.

On Sunday, April 7 a resident in the area of Federal Road and Perrineville Road noticed a sickly raccoon wandered into their yard. The resident brought the raccoon to a wildlife sanctuary in Mercer County where it was then taken to the New Jersey Department of Health Laboratory for testing.

Results came back Tuesday that the animal tested positive for rabies, reported the Middlesex County Department of Health.

Two people were exposed to the raccoon, and they were notified to consult their primary care physician regarding any rabies post-exposure treatment.

Additionally, a Middlesex County Office of Health Services’ Registered Environmental Health Specialist will be distributing rabies fact sheets within the area.
