NYC Man Killed By Police In Jan. Shootout At South Brunswick Motel

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — The New Jersey Attorney General has now identified the man killed by federal law enforcement agents in this shootout at a South Brunswick motel January 24.

The man killed during the encounter is Shamar Leggette, 41, of Brooklyn.

At 2:05 p.m. on that date, members of the U.S. Marshals, assisting the New York office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, arrived at the motel. It was the MHO Inn & Suites on Rt. 1 south in Monmouth Junction.

They were there to execute an arrest warrant for Leggette, who was wanted for several felonies.

At 2:47 p.m., Leggette exchanged gunfire with the law enforcement officers, and they returned fire. Leggette was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 4:29 p.m.

Authorities recovered two firearms near his body. No officers were hit during the shooting.
