Rabid Raccoon Found In Middlesex County Sept. 1

A raccoon found Sept. 1 in Monroe Township has tested positive for rabies. Someone's dog killed it and was also exposed to the virus.

MONROE TWP., NJ — A raccoon found Sept. 1 in Monroe Township has tested positive for rabies, the Middlesex County Health Dept. announced. The raccoon was found in the vicinity of Lori Street and Michelle Street.

This is the ninth rabid animal reported within Middlesex County for 2018 and the second rabid animal in Monroe Township so far this year.

Last Saturday, September 1 the Animal Control Officer for the Township of Monroe responded to a property where a resident’s dog had killed a raccoon. The raccoon was sent to the New Jersey Department of Health Laboratory for testing. It was reported on Thursday, September 6 that the animal tested positive for rabies.

There were no known human exposures and there was one domestic animal exposure to the raccoon. Howeer, the dog has a current rabies vaccination and received a rabies vaccine booster, the Middlesex County Health dept. said.
