South Brunswick Garage With Hazardous Materials Destroyed By Fire

The garage contained vehicles and numerous hazardous materials including propane tanks and welding equipment, said the fire department.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — A garage containing hazardous materials at a home in Georges Road, South Brunswick, was destroyed in a fire early on Friday morning.

No casualties were reported since the garage was detached from the home, said Monmouth Junction fire chief Scott Smith.

According to officials, around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, the fire department responded to a fire on Georges Road. Police officers, Monmouth Junction Fire Chief Scott Smith and Deputy Chief Sean Wert arrived on the scene to find a detached garage heavily involved in fire.

The fire was challenging and dangerous as the garage contained vehicles and numerous hazardous materials including propane tanks and welding equipment, said the fire department.

All three township fire departments - Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park and Kingston - were summoned to the scene. Additional firefighters from Franklin Park, Griggstown and Montgomery Township were called in to cover the South Brunswick fire stations.

The Middlesex County Hazardous Materials team also responded, as well as the Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad, South Brunswick EMS, and North Brunswick EMS.

The scene was finally cleared around 4:30 a.m., informed Smith.

The incident is currently under investigation by the South Brunswick Township Fire Safety Bureau.
