SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — After 31 years of dedicated service to the South Brunswick community, Tom Morris, the Director of Parks and Recreation, is calling it a career on Thursday.

His oversight and direction has helped to create one of the largest park systems in southern Middlesex County. When Morris first arrived in South Brunswick there was only a handful of parks, but with his guidance and the foresight, the town expanded to 23 parks encompassing 627 acres.

“Tom has always had a special skill of working with everyone to accomplish a goal," said South Brunswick Deputy Mayor Joe Camarota. "He worked with countless sports programs and the school district to make sure everyone had a place to play. He was always available to talk through issues or problems. Our summer program was one of the top rated in the state because of his efforts. I thank him for all he has done for our community.”

Morris has been instrumental in the acquisition of many parcels of land, the development of many parks including fields, playgrounds and other important play areas for the residents of all ages. His strength throughout his career has been his ability to partner with different people and organizations to provide the best opportunities for recreational activity.

His knowledge and skill led him to be elected as President of the New Jersey Parks & Recreation Association (NJRPA). He developed statewide influence with his calm demeanor and easy approach. His networking and knowledge allowed the recreation department to expand programs and outreach throughout the years.

Tom has served on numerous South Brunswick Township boards and committees throughout his years here. His top priority has always been serving the residents whether in youth sports, special needs or senior citizen activities. Tom always had the best interest of others in his heart. He worked with hundreds of people and boards to ensure our youth had the opportunity to play all sports. The hard work and dedication Tom he has shown will benefit countless youths for decades to come.

In 2016 his outstanding work was recognized when he received the “Ellen Gambatese Pediatric Cancer Volunteer of the Year” award by the Hugs for Brady Foundation. The award was presented to Tom because he exemplified the true definition of generosity and made selfless contributions of his time and talent to helping children.
