South Brunswick Schools Cancels All After-5 PM Activities Due To Severe Storm

The district is among many across the region taking precautions as forecasters warn of wind gusts, possible tornadoes and flash floods.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — South Brunswick School District has cancelled all activities scheduled after 5 p.m. Monday as a tornado watch and severe thunderstorm threat grips Middlesex County and much of New Jersey.

The district announced the cancellations citing inclement weather, urging families to plan accordingly.

The move comes as the National Weather Service has placed 16 New Jersey counties — including Middlesex — under a tornado watch set to expire at 7 p.m. Forecasters are warning of "a few" tornadoes, quarter-sized hail, and wind gusts reaching up to 80 mph.

Storms could begin as early as 2 p.m., but the window of greatest concern runs from 5 p.m. through 11 p.m., moving west to east across the state — precisely the hours South Brunswick's cancellations cover.

"The primary threat remains wind, however the threat for tornadoes is increasing," the National Weather Service said Monday.

Even outside of thunderstorms, wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph are expected across the region. Heavy rainfall — potentially reaching 1 to 2 inches per hour at its peak — could trigger flash flooding, with urban areas along the I-95 corridor particularly at risk.

Up to 1.5 inches of rain is forecast for the area overall.

Residents are urged to stay weather aware through Monday evening. Cold and windy conditions are expected to continue Tuesday before temperatures return to more seasonal levels later in the week.
