South Brunswick Seeks To Acquire Over 200 Acres Of Land For Open Space
The township is expected to spend $12,600,000 on acquiring the land. Council says the move will stop overdevelopment in town.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Overdevelopment has been a huge topic of discussion in the township. But the township is now taking steps to ensure there is enough open space for residents.
The Township is seeking to acquire over 200 acres of land for the purposes of open space. To this end, Council will be introducing an ordinance at the next meeting appropriating $12,600,000 to purchase the land.
“If Council will think about Route 522, New Road, Route 1, Major Road Northumberland Lane - that whole quadrant of property within those roadways, which approximates to somewhat 200 plus acres, that’s for the open space purchase,” Municipal Manager Bryan Bidlack told council.

Deputy Mayor Joe Camarota said that although the over $12 million was a huge amount, it was being spent on land for open space.
“This is something that this council has been very active in doing over the last 20-25 years. There's a lot of discussion and talk about trying to develop this land. This is something that we try to do to stop development in our town,” Camarota said.

“That's 227 acres of just dedicated space. We're proud of that. I think it's something that we must move forward with.”
The ordinance will be introduced during the next council meeting to be held later this month.
