Teen Killed By SUV While Crossing Route 1: South Brunswick Police

The 14-year-old was struck by an SUV after climbing over the center divider to cross Route 1.

SOUTH BRINSWICK, NJ – A teenager was killed Wednesday night after being struck by an SUV on Route 1, said authorities.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:25 p.m., when the 14-year-old pedestrian was crossing Route 1 after climbing over the center divider, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Raymond J. Hayducka of South Brunswick Police Department.

“Our community is hurting right now with the loss of this young life. I have been in touch with Superintendent of Schools Scott Feder and he is coordinating counseling for any students or family members in need. We will continue to work with our schools to provide the resources to deal with this tragedy,” said Hayducka.

According to the police, the teen whose name was not released, was struck by a Land Rover traveling northbound on Route 1 in the area of New Street. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver stopped the car and tried to help the teenager, said Ciccone. The driver also remained on the scene to cooperate with law enforcement.

The investigation is ongoing.
