Williams was trapped in his Toyota Corolla after a 13-vehicle chain-reaction crash in the outer lanes of the highway in Cranbury, according to police.

Other people were injured in the crashes at 9:11 p.m., near mile marker 71.4, but no one else suffered injuries that are considered life-threatening.

State Police said icy roads are believed to be a factor in the crashes that occurred on both the inner and outer lanes of the highway.

State Police said two tractor-trailers slowed down to try to avoid other collisions that had already occurred, but both truck drivers lost control because of ice on the road.

Those two trucks then obstructed the road, causing a chain-reaction crash, police said.

A total of 21 vehicles were involved in crashes on the inner lanes, while 19 more vehicles were involved in multiple crashes on the outer lanes.
