14 Best Places for Listening To Live Music Around South Orange NJ

Best thing about live music is that all you need for a good performance is a place to perform & a place for the patrons, then COVID arrived.

The 2020 pandemic threw us all for a loop as Social Distancing was introduced to us. We all hunkered down to stay safe as we all hope for the best. As we waited for a solution to the COVID-19 Pandemic we all wondered what's next. Since we couldn't all be together because of the COVID Pandemic, spreading out was the name of the game.

Live music is a creative outlet for the performer and can be soul saving and mentally uplifting for the audience. Big town or small town, one of the best things about live music is that all you need for a good performance is a place to perform and a place for the patrons to listen. Enter social distancing and the live music along with the benefits disappeared. We all talked and wrote about surviving coronavirus and social distancing because this time there was no doubt we were all in this together. Here in South Orange, New Jersey, local folks, government and business folks got together, got very creative in helping small businesses thrive and came up with a few different ways to keep the music alive around South Orange throughout this ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic.

Normally inside and at two locations, it was time to get creative and a key part of the mission was keeping people safe and helping businesses survive. South Orange Village Government, South Orange Village Center Alliance (SOVCA) joined with Gregory Burrus Productions and figured out how to start spreading the music all around South Orange, NJ. We found a new stage and a very wide open parking lot and an agreeable South Orange Village Government that invited the restaurants to move outside with outdoor seating. Local business venues were in agreement, community folks were receptive and then we proceeded to spread the music all around South Orange, NJ to various restaurants, storefronts and parks.

We started in July under the warmth of the Sum wearing short sleeves and t-shirts and made it all the way in our outdoor settings to Christmas Eve with heaters while wearing coats and jackets. What a blast we had. I should mention that the South Orange Holiday Open Air Market shown above was very much appreciated by it's patrons and was recognized with a 2020 Downtown New Jersey Placemaking award that went to SOVCA for the Holiday Open Air Market.
