Albin Kubilus, a Resident of Village Apartments of the Jewish Federation, is Honored for 50 Years of Service to His Union

Kubilus Receives Award of Merit from Local #68 International Union of Operating Engineers

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., September 28, 2014 – Albin Kubilus, a resident of Village Apartments of the Jewish Federation (http://www.jchcorp.org), was recently recognized by Local #68 International Union of Operating Engineers for his 50 years of union membership and for exhibiting loyalty and dedication to his field. He was honored at an organization dinner and received his plaque on September 11, 2014 at a ceremony at the Newark Museum. Union members who had reached the 35-year and 50-year marks were among the honorees. Kubilus, who retired in 2006, had worked during the last 25 years of his career at the Essex County Power Plant in Cedar Grove, N.J. as a stationary engineer, operating the turbines that powered 125 buildings in the community.

Kubilus holds four different types of operating licenses which have enabled him to run huge steam boilers and turbines to run industrial plants and power plants over the decades. Of his job at the Essex County Power Plant, he explained that, “I ran the turbines that generate electricity as well as the three steam boilers that powered the turbines. I could do all of that because of my different licenses and experience.”

He started his work life as a young maintenance man at the Borden Milk Company bottling plant in Newark; the union sent him to school to earn his fireman license (to run steam boilers) and then his engineer license. He was later drafted into the army during the Vietnam war, while working at the Budweiser brewery in Newark. He was stationed at a stateside missile base to run the generators there and received additional engineering training during his military service. Kubilus is active in the American Legion and used to participate in the honor guard during public ceremonies.
