Cantor Honored for 45 Years of Service to Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel

Forty-five years ago, Theodore Aronson became one of the youngest cantors in the United States when he was installed at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel (TSTI) in South Orange, N.J.  Today, Aronson is one of the longest serving cantors.  During all that time, TSTI has been Aronson’s only pulpit.

As he prepares to take on a new role as their Cantor Emeritus, the members of TSTI are remembering a lifetime of occasions when Aronson’s baritone voice was lifted in song to mark important passages in their lives. A press release from the temple states they will be commemorating his services with a Festive Musical Shabbat service on May 18th and a Simcha Celebration on June 9th.

“Ted has the voice of a great cantor and the wisdom of a great rabbi,” said Jay Rice, current president of TSTI. “He has always been there for us, sharing our joys and tribulations. Over the years, he’s brought us compassion, empathy and insight, and if need be, he’ll even step in with a joke.”

During his tenure as cantor, Aronson explored a wide range of musical genres, from classical to rock, traditional to folk, and the Temple developed a reputation for being at the forefront of sacred Jewish music.

“Ted Aronson is one of those individuals whose priorities are always clear and always in the right place,” concluded TSTI’s Rabbi Daniel Cohen. “His family, Israel, children, our congregation, music, doing good in the world, and being a mensch all have their place on his list of priorities. We are so thankful that, while he is retiring, he is not going anywhere. Not only will Ted remain in South Orange, but he will be an active and involved Cantor Emeritus.”
