That’s the message to teens from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in preparation for the upcoming holiday weekend celebration. It’s taken from an NIDA blog written to give teens the facts and research to help them make good decisions about their health and behavior. According to the NIDA, July 4th, is a time where the potential for alcohol abuse is significant. There is lots of alcohol around. And, it’s easy to get from family and friends.
Young men are especially at risk during the July 4th holiday weekend. According to the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), “young men are more likely than females or older individuals to be injured by fireworks at holiday gatherings. They are also at higher risk of having an alcohol related emergency room visit during the July 4th weekend. This was established in a July, 2009 study, which showed that two thirds of emergency room visits during the 4th of July weekend were made by males, and the number of visits for young males at that time, doubled in relation to visits on an average day in the month.”
What can a parent do to prepare for and minimize risky behavior?

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recommends three rules to parents to help prevent under-age drinking: talk to your kids early, talk often, and get others involved to serve as positive role models in your kid’s life.
