13 miles doesn’t look that far…in the rearview mirror. The 2014 More/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half Marathon lived up to being a fun and fierce experience. April 13th was a beautiful warm day in Central Park, 1st 70+ degree day this year! Ladies of all shapes and sizes were fit, fabulous and ready to run. I felt strong and my injuries were at bay. My sorority sister flew in from Atlanta to run with me, specifically to dance my Choreogroove to TLC’s ‘Meant to Be’ at the finish line and encourage me to keep pursuing my vision. And, my Essex Hudson Jack & Jill Chapter supermoms were ready to rock the race.
I killed it for being a novice, especially since it was only my second Half Marathon. I ran the entire race this time finishing in 2hr 8min! What!?!.. Fierce.. I’m hooked. My family was there at the finish line cheering me home..yeah! The best part was the fellowship and sisterhood I could see and feel all around me.

Fear and Doubt Pop In
Then I had the nerve to get to the finish line and get nervous about sharing my Choreogroove in the post-race area because I only had a small group of women to help me demonstrate. Well, as you can imagine, my sorority sister was having none of that, given she flew all the way from Atlanta just to support me. That’s love and sisterhood. My cousin was also like, what?, get yourself together!

And so I got myself together. My crew danced at the finish, some of the Jack & Jill supermoms and daughters joined in and we all had fun supporting one another and celebrating our accomplishments. Positively empowering!
Now What…
I’ll continue to run. It gives me peace through life’s challenges. I’ll be back for the 2015 More/Fitness Half. I’ll be focused on breaking the 2hr mark and I’ll be dancing another Choreogroove at the finish. This time with a larger group of racers. :-)
I’m gathering a group of local community members to learn and dance a Choreogroove for National Dance Day, created by So You Think You Can Dance producer Nigel Lythgoe to promote healthy lifestyles, dance education, and physical fitness.
Lace up, we’ll be doing it July 26th. You down?
