Essex and Morris Seniors are Invited to Learn Emergency Preparedness on Oct. 29

Jewish Community Housing Corporation Promotes Emergency Plans and Readiness for Seniors at “Storm Chaser” Presentations on October 29

Organization’s Four Senior Communities in Essex and Morris Counties will Hold Free Informational Seminars, Have Emergency Supplies Available for Sale, to Help Prepare Older Adults for Effects of Harsh Weather, Storms

WEST ORANGE, N.J., October 10, 2013 – The Jewish Community Housing Corporation of Metropolitan New Jersey (JCHC) will sponsor free informational seminars to help older adults prepare for severe storms and emergencies at its Storm Chaser event on Tuesday, October 29, 2013. The program will be presented at all four of JCHC’s senior living communities on that day and each is open to the public. The goal is to help area seniors be better prepared in the event of a natural disaster similar to last year’s Superstorm Sandy.

The program will feature speakers who will discuss emergency preparedness and share safety tips; all attendees will receive information packet, and free giveaways. Emergency supplies will be available for purchase at each community and will include flashlights, portable LED lanterns and battery-operated radios, Brita water pitchers with filters, travel moist towelettes, hand-held can openers, personal hygiene kits for men and women, and travel-size first aid kits. In addition, each community will raffle off a Red Cross emergency supplies back pack designed specifically for use by the elderly.

“Our residents’ safety and security are top of mind for us as we approach storm season and winter weather,” said Harold Colton-Max, CEO of the JCHC. “Our site managers have comprehensive emergency plans and services in place so everyone remains ‘JCHC strong’ in the case of weather-related power outages and related situations. We are happy to be able to share our accumulated knowledge and experience with the seniors living in the wider community.”

 

The October 29 programs are scheduled at the senior communities at the following times and locations:

·         Village Apartments of the Jewish Federation, 110 Vose Avenue in South Orange at 6:00 p.m. in the dining room.

·         South Orange B’nai B’rith Federation House, 219 South Orange Avenue in South Orange at 1:00 p.m. in the community room.

·         Jewish Federation Plaza, 750 Northfield Avenue in West Orange at 1:00 p.m. in the recreation room.

·         Lester Senior Housing Community, 903-905 Route 10 East in Whippany (on the Aidekman Campus of the JCC MetroWest) at 11:00 a.m. in the multi-purpose room.
