Seton Hall University's undergraduate program in Art History and graduate program in Museum Professions are pleased to announce a special lecture by Dr. Barbara Gaehtgens, a distinguished art historian and well-known expert on Dutch seventeenth-century art. Dr. Gaehtgens will speak on The Abduction of Ganymede, an early painting by Rembrandt van Rijn. The focus of her lecture will be the work's unorthodox depiction of the famous classical myth of Ganymede, a beautiful youth whom Zeus desires to be his cupbearer. Rembradnt's decision to portray Ganymede as a squirming, undignified toddler has long puzzled art scholars. Dr. Gaehtgens's talk will examine Rembrandt's unusual treatment of the subject matter and its possible political implications.
