Grand Jury Indicts Two for Murder of Seton Hall University Sophomore

Marcus Bascus, 20, Nicholas Welch, 26, charged with death of Jessica Moore

NEWARK — An Essex County Grand Jury indicted two East Orange men Tuesday afternoon for the September 2010 murder of a Seton Hall University sophomore, according to officials.

Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, said , and , were charged with felony murder, murder, conspiracy to commit murder, burglary, four counts of attempted murder and two weapons offenses. In addition, Welch was charged with hindering prosecution by destroying or tampering with evidence. The indictment also alleges the two acted as co-defendants.

Authorities say Welch was the triggerman, gunning down , and injuring four others Sept. 25 at an off-campus house party in East Orange. Welch originally was turned away from the gathering, but returned and opened fire on nearly 50 people at the event.

Authorities accuse Welch with the weapon.

on Sept. 27 and Bascus was captured two days later in a locked apartment bathroom in Pennsylvania.

Moore, a psychology major, was shot shortly after midnight that Saturday and later died around 3:20 p.m. at University Hospital in Newark, according to Carter.

Of the four injured, two were Seton Hall University students, one was a New Jersey Institute of Technology graduate and another was a New York City resident.

"This was truly a tragic case of random, senseless violence aimed at students who had simply gathered to have a good time," said Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Romesh C. Sukhdeo in a statement. Sukhdeo is prosecuting the case.

The duo's arraignment is scheduled before New Jersey Superior Court Judge Peter Vazquez on Oct. 4.

Carter said Bascus and Welch remain in Essex County jail in lieu of $2 million bail each.
