Even through this pandemic, the holiday season for most of us was still a positive time of the year and bought in some level of added happiness and joy. Not necessarily so for current and former youth of the foster care system. The holidays are commonly associated with family and other close relationships coming together, bringing up feelings and emotions of the past.

Feeling vulnerable and exposed, the holidays become challenging to say the least for young people who have aged out of the foster care system. This past holiday season, the Junior League of Montclair-Newark became aware of several young people, through its relationship with Embrella NJ (“Embrella”), who were struggling with food insecurity issues, personal care and other basic needs during the holidays.
It was the great honor of the Junior League of Montclair-Newark to teamed up with Embrella and donated $1500 towards gift cards for grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. to ensure none of these young people has to go without their basic needs met during the holidays.

We also draw upon training provided by the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) and conduct joint training sessions with other Leagues. The JLMN's Education & Training Committee conducts a variety of programs for our membership throughout the year. We draw upon members to teach each other and bring in outside expert trainers.
