Junior Police Academy in Session

The 19 "cadets" visited the Rescue Squad and the Fire Department on Tuesday.

Nineteen boys ages 10 to 14 are enrolled in the Junior Police Academy this week, and they started their second day with a visit to the Essex County Crime Scene Unit in Orange, a pizza lunch provided by the Village Trattoria, and stops at the Rescue Squad and the Fire Department.

The "cadets" are divided into three squads—Alpha, Bravo and Charlie—and take on activities as a team during the course of the week. The "CSI"-style technologies shown to them at the county Crime Scene Unit was universally considered to be one of the highlights of the day.

"They had a fake crime that we had to solve," explained Jared Mahoney, 11, of South Orange.
