One Car Recovered, One Stolen In South Orange: Police

The Newark Police Department found a Mercedes stolen in a robbery on Oct. 18.

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - One vehicle was stolen and another was recovered in the span of just over a week according to the South Orange Police Department.

On Friday, Oct. 12 the owner of a business on Irvington Ave reported at approximately 4:15 a.m. someone stole a 2012 Jeep that was parked in the lot overnight, police said. Upon review of the surveillance video, it appeared that a white van pulled into the lot, someone exited the van, entered the Jeep and both vehicles drove off eastbound on Irvington Avenue, police said. The people in the video appeared to be wearing hooded sweatshirts, but no further description is available, police said. The Detective Bureau is investigating the incident.

Just over a week later, the Newark Police Department notified police headquarters on Oct. 20 at approximately 9:08 p.m. that they had recovered a stolen auto which was reported stolen during a robbery of a resident on Thursday, Oct. 18. Newark Police were conducting a motor vehicle checkpoint in the area of South Orange Avenue and Columbia Avenue and as the stolen vehicle approached, the occupants bailed out and fled on foot, police said. No arrests were made but the 2012 Mercedes-Benz was recovered. Officers towed the vehicle to the South Orange Police Headquarters and detectives responded to process the vehicle, police said.
