Police Blotter: Alleged Bike Thief Arrested
Police arrested a 46-year-old East Orange man for theft and possession of burglary tools.

Saturday, Sept. 19:
- A Seton Hall student reported that her car, which had been parked by a multi-family home on Tichenor Avenue, had been keyed, with profanity scratched on the passenger-side door.
Tuesday, Sept. 22:
- A train commuter had his bicycle seat and post stolen while the bike was chain-locked at South Orange station throughout the day.

- A 12-year-old found that his Trek 3700 mountain bike had been stolen from the rack at the train station when he came to find it after school.
Thursday, Sept. 24:
- A 2005 Honda Odyssey and a 2006 Toyota Corolla parked at a Montrose Avenue home were found to have been ransacked in the early morning. There was no damage to the vehicles, and only an inactive Verizon cell phone appeared to have been taken from one of the cars.
- A blue 2005 Saab 9-3 parked on Mayhew Drive overnight was burglarized, and the owner reported that a gym bag, gym clothing, loose change and two sports drinks were taken. There was no damage to the vehicle, though he reported that the doors were locked.
- An unlocked brown 2008 Subaru Legacy parked at a Beechspring Road residence was burglarized overnight, and a wallet containing a driver's license and two credit cards was taken.
- Shortly after 10:30 a.m., Officer Rob Atterbury observed a man riding a bike north on Scotland Road and remembered him from previous bicycle theft arrests. He then responded to the train station on Sloan Street, found that a bike lock had been cut, and notified headquarters of his observations. Chief Jim Chelel then advised units that he had observed a man matching the description across the street from Highland train station on Scotland Road in Orange. The man—identified as Kenneth Barno, 46, of East Orange—was placed under arrest by Officer Atterbury, Lt. Jim Aiosa and Chief Chelel. He was also in possession of a pair of red and black wire cutters in his front pocket. After being transported to headquarters by Officer Robert Raddi, Barno was charged with theft and possession of burglary tools. He also had outstanding warrants in Irvington, Montclair, Union and Kearny. The Jamis mountain bike was returned to its owner, a 16-year-old student, after he reported it missing.

- A South Kingman Road resident reported that someone had stolen his hammock from his backyard in the past two weeks.
Sunday, Sept. 27:
- The passenger-side window of a white 2009 Ford van parked on Eder Terrace was smashed in, and a GPS unit was reported stolen.
