Police Blotter: Driver Reports Egging

More incidences of burglaries to unlocked cars in driveways are recorded.

Friday, Oct. 16:

  • A witness observed two juvenile males attempting to steal a car from the NJ Transit lot by SOPAC. After discovering they had been seen, the boys fled, but the witness gave chase and dialed 911 on his cell phone to provide a description to police. Officer Donald Wallschleger apprehended the first suspect on Vose Avenue, and Officer Robert Infantes spotted the second on Irvington Avenue. Both were positively identified by the witness and taken into custody.
  • The right front headlight of a red 1998 Volvo V70 parked in a Church Street parking lot was smashed in. The owner reported that this was the sixth such incident in the past three months and believes it's the work of a former friend.

Sunday, Oct. 18:

  • While on patrol at Irvington Ave. and College Place, Officer Stephen Dolinac performed a random license plate check on a car headed west on Irvington, which revealed that the registered owner, John L. Whitaker, 40, of South Orange, was a suspended driver. He activated lights and sirens and initiated a motor vehicle stop. Upon approaching the car, Dolinac confirmed that the driver was its registered owner, smelled alcohol on Whitaker's breath, and noticed an open container of beer in the cup holder. When asked if he had been drinking, Whitaker said he had had "one or two drinks." After failing field sobriety tests, he was placed under arrest, taken to headquarters for processing, and charged with a DUI.
  • A driver headed north on Prospect Street shortly before 4:30 p.m. reported that two eggs were thrown at his car near the road's intersection with Garfield Place, causing a crack in his windshield.
  • Three vehicles were burglarized in a Montrose Avenue driveway overnight. A wallet containing the owner's driver's license, $60 in cash, and two credit cards was taken from a Jeep Wrangler that was broken into via a side panel unzipped by the perpetrator.
  • An unlocked 1996 Ford Explorer parked in an Irving Avenue driveway was burglarized overnight, and two sweaters were taken.
  • An unlocked 2006 Honda Odyssey parked in a Hamilton Road driveway was burglarized overnight, and a wallet containing the owner's driver's license, ATM card, credit cards, and $120 in cash was taken.
  • An unlocked 2004 Honda Accord parked in a Hamilton Road driveway was burglarized overnight, but only a house plant was reported missing.
