Wednesday, Dec. 23:

  • For the past several weeks, bundles of Star-Ledger newspapers have been stolen from in front of the Village Smoke Shop after being delivered, prior to the store's opening. On Wednesday, an officer observed that the delivery had been made at 5:45 a.m. and returned at 5:58 a.m. to see a black Ford wagon backing out of a parking space in front of the store. He also noticed that the bundle of papers was missing, called for backup, and stopped the driver at Valley and Fourth streets. The man, later identified as Paul Vilmenax, told the officers that he'd been asked to take the papers to a Star-Ledger office for safekeeping, but the officers confirmed with the store that no one was authorized to move the papers after they had been deliverered. Vilmenax was arrested for theft and transported to headquarters.
