Police Blotter: Multiple Robbery Attempts

The following arrest information was supplied by the South Orange Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

  • A 17-year old youth said on Nov. 21 at approximately 7:45 a.m., he saw a suspicious-looking Black Hummer as he walked on Richmond Road. The youth said two men in the vehicle pulled alongside him and asked him if he needed a ride. The boy declined and the men left. The men are described as being between 25 and 35 years old with tan coats and black hair. The boy said the driver had a full beard and the passenger had a black mustache. The teen also said he believed they may have been following him and asked him twice if he needed a ride before they pulled away traveling toward Underhill Field.

  • Two Seton Hall students, Brian McKenna of New York City and Peter Malchev of Brooklyn, both 19, were arrested on Nov. 21 at approximately 3:50 p.m. Seton Hall security contacted the South Orange Police Department because they found the students in possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (marijuana) as well as drug paraphernalia while on campus in their residence hall. The students were arrested at the scene without incident.

  • Will Jordan, a 40-year-old Newark resident, and John Mitchell, a 30-year-old Linwood resident, were arrested on Nov. 22 at approximately 2 p.m. after officers responded to a burglary in progress of a South Ridgewood Road residence. The homeowner contacted police when he heard individuals inside his home on a lower level. An officer arrived to find a green Buick leaving the scene.  The officer followed the vehicle and pulled it over a few blocks away in Maplewood. Officers discovered a jewelry box and jewelry belonging to the homeowner. Jordan and Mitchell were arrested at the scene.

  • A South Kingman Road resident said sometime during the overnight hours of Nov. 22, someone smashed both the front and rear windshields to her vehicle, a 2002 Subaru.

  • A Montague Place resident said sometime between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 23, someone entered her home and ransacked several rooms removing money and jewelry. The victim believes the person(s) had entered the home via a rear door after locating a key as there were no signs of a forced entry.

  • Kali Warren, a 28-year-old South Orange resident, was arrested on Nov. 24 at approximately 12:05 a.m. after officers responded to the parking lot adjacent to Cryan's Beef & Ale because of a disturbance. After officers disbursed the crowd, they discovered Warren had an arrest warrant in Montclair. Warren was arrested without incident and processed.  

  • A North Wyoming resident said sometime overnight on Nov. 24, someone had entered her unlocked 2010 vehicle and removed her iPhone and her wallet containing cash and credit cards.

  • A Meeker Street resident said sometime overnight on Nov. 25, someone entered his unlocked 2009 Honda and taken a GPS.  The victim also said a blue bicycle was believed to have been removed from his unlocked garage a few days earlier.

  • A juvenile victim said on Nov. 26, at approximately 3:30 p.m., he was robbed of his laptop by two young black men as he exited the library.  The victim said he struggled with the men briefly before they removed his laptop. The victim also said he may have known the identity of one of the men.

  • Rajahn Hassam, a 62-year-old Newark resident, was arrested on Nov. 28 at approximately 12:30 p.m. after detectives determined Hassam was attempting to sell fraudulent coins (silver dollars) to a victim at the PNC Bank parking lot. Hassam was arrested without incident and processed.
