Police Blotter: Rash of Burglaries to Unlocked Vehicles

At least eight unlocked cars were broken into on Friday night into early Saturday morning.

Thursday, May 20:

  • A train commuter reported locking up his Schwinn bicycle at a rack under South Orange train station at about 8 a.m. and finding it missing when he returned at about 7:15 p.m.

Friday, May 21:

  • A South Orange Middle School student reported his Mongoose mountain bike stolen from a rack by the entrance to the municipal pool.
  • A gas station attendant at South Orange Friendly Service reported that a man between 30 and 40 pulled up to the pump at about 6:40 p.m. and requested $20 of gas for the 2000 Chevy Malibu he was driving. When asked to pay, he said, "Oh man," and took off east on Irvington Avenue.

  • An unlocked 2010 Lexus RX parked in a Prospect Place driveway was burglarized overnight, and $10 in loose change was reported stolen.
  • An unlocked 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser parked in a Riggs Place driveway was ransacked overnight, but nothing was reported missing.
  • An unlocked 1996 Ford Explorer parked in a Prospect Place driveway was burglarized overnight, and a GPS unit was reported stolen.
  • An unlocked 2009 Audi A6 parked in a Prospect Place driveway was burglarized overnight, and a GPS unit was reported stolen.
  • An unlocked 2009 Volkswagen CC parked in a Prospect Street driveway was burglarized overnight, and a small amount of change was reported stolen.
  • An unlocked 2009 Audi Q7 parked in a Prospect Street driveway was burglarized overnight, and a small amount of change was reported stolen.
  • An unlocked 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser parked in a Roland Avenue driveway was ransacked overnight, but nothing was reported missing.
  • An unlocked 2001 Saturn SL parked in a Riggs Place driveway was burglarized overnight, and a $200 makeup kit was reported stolen.
