Police Blotter: Three Residential Burglaries Reported

Homes on West Montrose Avenue, Hartford Road and Fairview Avenue were broken into.

Tuesday, June 16:

  • A gray 2009 Toyota Camry parked in a Stanley Road driveway was broken into overnight on Monday via a smashed front passenger window. A Mac laptop valued at $3,000, an iPod valued at $500 and a camera valued at $150 were missing from the front seat. No damage appeared to have been done to the car parked next to the Camry in the driveway.
  • Perpetrators cut a large hole in the convertible top of a silver 2007 Saab parked in a North Wyoming Avenue driveway overnight on Monday and stole $5 in singles.

Wednesday, June 17:

  • Two women returned from vacation to find their Fairview Avenue apartment burglarized. The perpetrators had gained access by prying open the apartment door. Though no other apartments appear to have been broken into, the report noted that the victims had stood on the curbside by their building on the date of their departure with their luggage, waiting for a cab, and were observed by a crew of workers. The following items were reported stolen: $500 in cash, a $100 MP4 player, a pearl necklace and two pairs of $150 sunglasses.

  • A truck driver making a delivery had parked his vehicle at Irvington Avenue and Prospect Street and left several boxes on the truck's tailgate area. After making a count of the boxes, he noticed one missing and then spotted a man—later identified as Roderick Walker of South Orange—with the box, sitting on the curb. The driver approached Walker, who jumped up and ran south on Academy Street and then west on First Street. The driver flagged down an officer, who then spotted Walker hiding behind a bush at First and Valley streets. He called for backup, and Walker was placed under arrest and transported to headquarters without incident. The box in question contained Kirkland towels, toilet tissue, a pack of highlighters, a quart of cleaner, Pledge wipes and latex gloves.
  • A bicycle was stolen from a fenced-in backyard on Fairview Avenue between approximately 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
  • Black graffiti spelling out "BST" and other markings was sprayed onto a stop sign at Crestwood Drive and Longview Road. A stop sign a few blocks away at Mountain and Crestwood drives was also spray-painted.

Saturday, June 20:

  • Police responded shortly after 9:30 p.m. to a report of a burglary on West Montrose Avenue. The front door had been kicked in, and the home had been ransacked. The owner of the house reported the following items stolen: a cigar box containing an airbrush; two passports; social security cards; birth certificates; a marriage license; a jewelry box containing six watches and various rings and necklaces; and a Toshiba laptop. He had left the house at about 6:45 p.m., so the burglary took place some time between then and when the incident was reported.
