Police Blotter: A Rash of Car Break-ins

Police respond to GPS thefts and a vehicle fire.

Friday, Feb. 13:

  • A Charlton Avenue resident reported that someone entered her backyard and smashed the passenger-side front window of her 2005 Honda at around 5 p.m. Nothing was reported stolen, though there were electronics in the car.
  • Perpetrators broke into an unlocked 2007 Toyota RAV4 in Harrison Court and took the car's GPS system and a pair of Michael Kors sunglasses between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m.
  • A Turrell Avenue woman reported just after 1 p.m. that her 1998 Ford Escort was broken into -- with the rear passenger-side window smashed in -- and two jackets, a three-quarter length blue coat and a puffy black vest, were stolen.
  • Perpetrators entered an open garage on Woodland Place and smashed the front passenger-side window of a 2002 Honda between 8:15 p.m. the previous night and 8 a.m. that morning. A GPS system valued at $300 and a pair of sunglasses valued at $200 were taken.
  • While leaving for work shortly after 8:30 a.m., a Charlton Avenue resident reported that power tools and a binder of apartment keys for a building in Newark had been taken from her 2000 Lexus, along with an expired driver's license and a Social Security card. The car had been unlocked.

Saturday, Feb. 14:

  • Police responded to reports of a vehicle fire in the parking lot next to Seton Hall's Xavier Hall and found the front of a 1999 Honda -- whose driver was making a delivery -- engulfed in flames. The Fire Department also responded and extinguished the blaze.
