Police Blotter: Two DUI Arrests Over the Weekend

Additionally, police arrested an Orange man for burglary.

Early last Sunday morning, South Orange police made two arrests for driving under the influence:

Albert Slater, 58, of South Orange, was arrested at 12:16 a.m. after Officer Donald Wallschleger responded to a Great Hills Drive residence to investigate an activated burglar alarm. When police arrived on the scene, Slater was seen standing outside of a parked car, which appeared to have been involved in an accident. When asked what happened to his car, he admitted to hitting "something" and driving away. A strong odor of alcohol was detected on his breath. He was asked to perform field sobriety tests, administered by Officer Stephen Dolinac, but said that he was unable to complete them because he was too intoxicated.

Later that night at 3:53 a.m., Brian Carter, 31, of South Orange, was arrested for drunk driving after crashing into a tree on Prospect Street near Roland Avenue.  Officer Stephen Dolinac responded to a report of an accident on Roland; when he arrived, he found an abandoned car. A witness said she had seen a man exit the vehicle and head west on Roland. Shortly afterwards, the driver returned and identified himself. He said that he was driving on Prospect and fell asleep at the wheel. He declined medical attention, and showing signs of intoxication, was asked to take field sobriety tests. He was arrested for DUI after failing the tests.

Police also arrested a burglary suspect:

On Oct. 6, a daytime burglary occured at a residence on Scotland Road. (There were no proceeds from the burglary, according to Sgt. Joseph Levanda of the Community Relations Bureau.) Det. Brian McGuire responded to the scene and recovered forensic evidence which was sent to the New Jersey State Police for analysis. Based on this evidence, Derrick Myers, 40, of Orange, emerged as a suspect. Myers has a lengthy multi-state criminal history and a previous warrant out of South Orange. On Wednesday morning, South Orange detectives arrested Myers near his home and charged him with burglary.
