Police Blotter: Two Vehicles Parked Overnight at SOMS Burglarized

A laptop, a video iPod and an expensive bicycle were stolen from a car parked in the South Orange Middle School parking lot over the weekend.

Monday, July 20:

  • The superintendent of Gaslight Commons reported that a portion of the metal perimeter fence on the southeast corner of the property had been pulled down some time since the previous Friday.
  • The door lock of a white 1996 Oldsmobile parked in Lot 5—the municipal lot with an entrance on South Orange Avenue, facing Rite Aid—was damaged overnight on Sunday, but entry to the vehicle wasn't gained.

Tuesday, July 21:

  • Someone attempted to steal a green 1995 Jeep Wrangler parked in a Cottage Street parking lot between Sunday and Tuesday evenings. The steering column, radio and glove compartment were damaged.

  • Two cars parked overnight on Friday in the South Orange Middle School parking lot were broken into. The owner of a blue 2006 Nissan Murano reported two cameras—each valued at $200—missing, as well as the registration, insurance card, and owner's manuals. The owner of a gray 2007 Ford Explorer reported the following items missing: a Kestrel road bike valued at $2,500; a Dell laptop in a leather bag valued at $1,300; a video iPod valued at $250; clothing valued at $500; CDs valued at $1,000; and the car's registration and insurance. Entry was gained into both vehicles through damage to the driver's side door lock.

Monday, July 27:

  • Between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., a bundle of 50 newspapers was stolen from the front of Garden State News & Village Smoke Shop.
