Police Blotter: Wyoming Ave. Car Fire

Rash of burglaries to unlocked cars continues.

Monday, Dec. 7:

  • An unlocked 2000 Saturn SL2 parked in a Mountain House Road driveway was broken into overnight, and a GPS unit was stolen.

Tuesday, Dec. 8:

  • A 2000 Audi A6 was stolen from municipal lot 11—the NJ Transit lot adjacent to SOPAC—between approximately 6 a.m. and 10:30 p.m.
  • An attempted auto theft was reported on Mercer Place, where a 2002 Volkswagen Passat's ignition was damaged overnight. In addition, a GPS unit was stolen. There was no sign of forced entry, indicating that the car was unlocked.
  • An unlocked 2003 Ford Windstar parked in a Montague Place driveway was broken into overnight, and a change purse containing $20 in quarters was taken from the glove compartment.

  • At about 3:30 p.m., police responded to a car fire on Wyoming Avenue, which South Orange firefighters extinguished. The owner of a 2001 Audi A4 noticed her car smoking during her drive home; upon pulling into her driveway and shutting the car off, she realized it was on fire and contacted the fire department.
  • Perpetrators broke into a 2009 Infiniti M35 parked in the SOPAC (NJ Transit) lot by tampering with the driver's side door lock. The glove compartment was ransacked, but nothing appeared to be missing.

Saturday, Dec. 12:

  • An unlocked 2004 Toyota Corolla parked in a Glenview Road driveway was broken into overnight, and a GPS unit was stolen.
  • An unlocked 2000 Mazda MPV parked in a Hillside Place driveway was broken into overnight. Nothing was reported stolen.

  • A Christmas wreath was stolen from the front door of a Riggs Place residence.

Monday, Dec. 14:

  • A postal worker saw actors flee a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan parked on Finlay Place and enter a waiting car. He reported the incident, and the vehicle turned out to have been stolen out of Newark on the previous Friday.
