Police Make 2nd Arrest in Irvington Ave. Robbery/Kidnapping

Former Seton Hall basketball player Kelly Whitney, 27, of Chicago, was arrested Thursday night in connection with Monday's Irvington Avenue robbery allegedly involving Robert Mitchell, another former Seton Hall player who was dropped from the team on Sunday after he publicly criticized then-head coach Bobby Gonzalez.
Whitney, who played from Seton Hall from 2002 to 2006, was arrested at approximately 11 p.m. last night at a Newark hotel and charged with eight counts of kidnapping for forcing the occupants of the multi-family residence into a common area at gunpoint, eight counts of aggravated assault, robbery, burglary and weapons charges.
Whitney and Mitchell allegedly forced the eight occupants of the home to turn over $300 in cash and personal items including credit and debit cards, cell phones, drivers licenses and digital cameras at gunpoint. At least some of the occupants are Seton Hall students.

Mitchell was arrested on Tuesday when South Orange officers spotted him in the vicinity of South Orange and Poe avenues in Newark. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Thursday.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the South Orange Police Department and the United States Marshals Task Force participated in Whitney's arrest.

Bail for Whitney was set at $650,000 by the Honorable Amilkar Velez-Lopez, JMC. Both Mitchell and Whitney remain in custody in Essex County Jail. Whitney's arraignment has tentatively been scheduled for Monday, March 22.
A resident of the Irvington Avenue home reached on Thursday declined to comment on the case.
