Police Reports: Auto Theft and Another Couple of Attempts

Theft of a car from resident's own garage, and a couple of other auto theft attempts in vicinity of Seton Hall.

Tuesday, May 5:

  • A silver 2004 Audi A6 parked in the driveway of a Mosswood Avenue residence was broken into overnight. A report was made Tuesday morning that bricks had been thrown into the interior, and a foreign substance had been put into the ignition, making it useless.

Thursday, May 7:

  • Perpetrators tried to steal a black 2000 Jeep Cherokee parked on Tichenor Avenue between 3:50 p.m. and 4:50 p.m. Damage was done to the passenger-side door and door lock, and to the ignition.
  • Perpetrators tried to steal a blue 2001 Jeep Cherokee parked on Ward Place, and damage was done to the driver-side door lock and to the ignition. The incident was reported by the driver at 7:23 p.m., but a note was left on the car by a person who claimed to have observed an African-American man with dreadlocks who tried to steal the Jeep at 4:15 p.m. and then ran away on foot.

  • A Seton Hall student, who was staying overnight at the home of friends on Second Street, reported that his bag—containing clothes, a lease agreement, a Visa credit card, checks, passports, $40 in cash, and a Seton Hall-issued IBM valued at $1,600—was stolen from the premises while he was out to dinner. He observed that a first-floor window screen had been pushed in. When contacting the credit card company to report the theft, he discovered that purchases had already been made.
  • Graffiti was spray-painted onto the passenger-side front window of a blue 2002 Dodge van parked on Waverly Place. The incident was reported at 9 a.m. but could have taken place any time from 8:30 p.m. Thursday onward.

Saturday, May 9:

  • A bicycle with black shadow running figures belonging to a South Orange Middle School student was stolen from the bike rack under the train station, although it was double-locked.

  • A silver 2004 Volkswagen Jetta parked on Randolph Place was broken into on Sunday evening. The passenger-side window was smashed, and a purse containing a driver's license, debit card, cell phone, assorted IDs and $40 in cash was taken, along with a GPS unit.

Tuesday, May 12:

  • A Tillou Road resident found his 2007 Mercedes Benz S55 missing from his garage at around 7:15 a.m.
