Police Reports: Fish Stolen from Newstead Pond

Koi fish are stolen from a Newstead pond, and thieves who take credit cards from an unlocked car on Brentwood Drive go on a spending spree on Route 22.

Sunday, May 24:

  • An officer on patrol on Sunday afternoon noticed a gray 2004 Toyota Avalon parked in a private lot on Prospect Street with its passenger-side rear window punched out. The owner was contacted and stated that she had last seen her car the previous evening and couldn't find anything missing.

Tuesday, May 26:

  • A man flagged down a police officer Tuesday evening and said that his bike had been stolen from in front of his South Orange Avenue residence by a black male who fled south on Riggs Place. With the victim in the police car, the officer drove towards Irvington Avenue, and the victim made a positive ID of the suspect, who was pedaling east. At the corner of Irvington and W. Fairview avenues, the suspect took off on foot and then to the rear of a residence. The officer located the man—Edward Akuoko—placed him under arrest and transported him to headquarters, where the victim and his mother retrieved the bicycle.
  • It was reported that the left front bumper of a green 2002 Jaguar parked on Prospect Street was damaged with an unknown object between Sunday evening and early Monday morning.

  • No. 1 Chinese Restaurant was broken into overnight on Friday through a back bathroom window, and about $100 in cash and change were taken from the register. There was a ladder propped up against the building and some damage to the back door.

Sunday, May 31:

  • Two bikes were stolen from the garage of a Mountain House Road home overnight on Saturday. The first was a bright yellow 24-speed Hummer mountain bike, and the second was a red Schwinn chopper-style bike with a long banana seat and a wide back tire.

  • Between 20 and 25 Koi fish were stolen from a pond in the backyard of a Mayhew Drive residence some time between Saturday and Monday.
  • Three vehicles (a blue 2002 Dodge Caravan, a 1993 Toyota Camry and a gold 2006 Chrysler Pacifica) parked in the driveway of a Forest Road residence were broken into overnight on Sunday. The items stolen include: two Garmond GPS units, two 16 GB iPod Nanos and a white Contessa bicycle. The owner estimated that the total value of the stolen goods was $1,700.
  • An unlocked red 2005 Toyota Sienna parked in a Ravine Drive driveway was broken into overnight on Sunday. A Garmin GPS, a Wilson Tennis racquet and $15 in rolled change were taken.
  • A man's wallet was stolen from an unlocked 2008 Mercedes Benz ML3 parked in his Brentwood Drive driveway overnight on Sunday. He discovered the theft when he was contacted by Discover on Monday and asked if he was aware of charges made at Walmart on Route 22. He subsequently learned that charges made to his credit cards amounted to $2,200 at locations including the Walmart and a Hess gas station on Route 22. There was no ignition or door lock damage to the car.
