Police Reports: Man Detains Would-be Car Burglar

A firefighter catches a man trying to steal his car and holds him until police arrive.

Wednesday, March 18:

  • A 45-year-old firefighter from Morris County was exiting the doctors' offices at 707 South Orange Ave. around 12:30 p.m. when he saw a man inside his white 2005 Chrysler, rummaging through the center console. He managed to move the man out of the car and into the lobby of the building, where he detained him until police arrived. The suspect, Eugene White, Jr., 46, of Newark, was taken to police headquarters and charged with burglary and posession of burglary tools. (A pair of blue-handled pliers was discovered in his pants pocket.) Bail was set at $2,500 by the South Orange Municipal Court. White also has two outstanding warrants from Newark.
  • A blue 2007 Infinity Fx3 parked in the NJ Transit lot was broken into between about 5:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The contents of the glove compartment were dumped on the floor, but nothing appeared to have been stolen.

Saturday, March 20:

  • The passenger-side tires of a black 2000 Ford Focus parked in front of Cryan's were slashed shortly after midnight.

  • An unknown caller reported at 10:21 a.m. that a blue 2007 BMW 750 parked at Prospect St. and Village Road was being broken into. An unknown amount of small change was taken. After tracking the license plate of the suspect's car—a silver four-door 2005 Mitsubishi—police discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Union.

Monday, March 23:

  • The driver's side door lock of a silver 2008 BMW 335 parked for most of the day in the lot of Allegiance Community Bank was damaged.
  • A set of Callaway golf clubs were taken from a black 2005 BMW 745 parked at Allegiance Community Bank between 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The driver's side door lock and handle had been tampered with.
  • A silver 2008 BMW M3 parked in Municipal Lot 7 was broken into. The dashboard was taken, and a piece of electronic equipment was removed from the glove compartment, leaving exposed wires.
  • A gray 2004 BMW 750 parked in Municipal Lot 7 was broken into, though nothing appeared to have been stolen.
  • A black 2007 Lexus 350 parked in Municipal Lot 7 was broken into, though nothing appeared to have been stolen.
