Rash of Car Break-ins Near Maplewood Border During Blizzard

Twenty cars on Audley Street, Lenox Avenue and South Ridgewood Road were broken into.

Twenty cars—19 of which were unlocked—were broken into between Saturday night and Sunday morning during the snow storm, according to Police Chief James Chelel. The break-ins occurred on streets adjacent to the Maplewood border: Audley Street, Lenox Avenue and South Ridgewood Road.

Little of value was taken, and it was mostly loose change that was stolen from the cars, Chelel said. However, police will be tracking use of credit cards from stolen wallets.

Break-ins to unlocked cars have become a frequent occurrence across South Orange Orange, and, based on conversations with chiefs of neighboring police departments, who report the same phenomenon, Chelel believes that multiple groups are responsible.
