Reservation Stink Caused by Sewage

The state DEP turned the investigation over to the county.

A strange odor in the South Mountain Reservation is being caused by sewage in a stream, according to state officials.

The state Department of Environmental Protection tested the water in a stream in the vicinity of Tulip Springs, and the results tested positive for sewage, said agency spokeswoman Karen Hershey. State officials turned the investigation over to the Essex County Department of Health.

County officials could not be reached for comment immediately.

The investigation into the odor in the reservation started last Thursday when Millburn firefighters were called to the area, which is near the West Orange border. The investigation was suspended due to a lack of light and turned over to the Nutley hazmat team, which alerted the state DEP on Sunday night.

The hazmat team determined the issues were not chemical and were either organic or caused by sewage. However, it couldn't determine which sewer line could be causing the problem.
