Seton Hall Issues Alert About Armed Robbery

Contract employee reports being robbed at gunpoint near the campus entrance

The Seton Hall Department of Public Safety and Security sent out an alert early this morning warning that one of its contract employees reported being  robbed at gunpoint at 11:10 p.m. Monday at Stanley Road and South Orange Avenue  near the campus entrance.

The victim told South Orange Police dectectives that he was approached from behind as he walked along South Orange Avenue by a black male, approximately 21 years old,weighing about 130 pounds and wearing a dark hoodie sweatshirt. The suspect flashed a silver-colored handgun, took the victim’s money and cell phone and rode away on a bicycle.

South Orange Police Captain Edward Heckel said the victim was a security guard at Seton Hall and that the gunman walked up and demanded his money and cell phone. The victim said he heard the voice of a second person, but didn't see him and had no description.

The alert reminds students and others on campus that " it is always safer to travel in groups both on and off campus." It also encourages anyone who is robbed to cooperate.

"The value of any property that you might lose in this type of crime is not worth your personal safety," the alert says. Students and employees are also urged to take advantage of University provided transportation or use public transportation to travel about the area. Carry a cell phone and dial 911 in an emergency.
