Seton Hall Sacks Men's Basketball Coach Bobby Gonzalez
Gonzalez amassed a 66-59 record in four seasons at SHU.
Bobby Gonzalez has been fired as head coach of the Seton Hall men's basketball team, it was announced Wednesday.
"Performance and success are not measured solely by wins and losses, but also in the conduct of those associated with the program," said Patrick Hobbs, dean of Seton Hall's School of Law, who oversees the Athletics Department, in a press release. "We have expectations as to how our coaches and players will conduct themselves, and they are expected to treat everyone they interact with, whether officials, the press or our students, with the utmost respect, maturity and professionalism. Those core expectations must be met."
"It is essential that all University leaders embody the ideals that make us all so proud of Seton Hall," said University President Monsignor Robert Sheeran, in a press release.

Gonzalez ended his Seton Hall tenure Tuesday with an 87-69 loss at the Prudential Center to Texas Tech in the opening round of the 2010 NIT. The Daily News observed that Herb Pope was ejected for twice punching a Texas Tech player below the belt, and Gonzalez landed his seventh technical foul of the season. According to the article, there had long been concerns within the administration about the team's conduct under Gonzalez.
In four seasons, Gonzalez amassed an overall record of 66-59 and a 29-45 mark in BIG EAST Conference games, though the Pirates failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament in that time. He was hired by Seton Hall in April 2006 after seven seasons as head coach at Manhattan College and was signed to a three-year contract extension last year.
