Seton Hall University Celebrates St. Patrick's Day with Four Faculty Named to "Irish Education 100"

The list, an annual effort, honors prominent leaders in American education, especially at the university level, who are of Irish descent.

Four Seton Hall University faculty have been inducted into the “Irish Education 100” honor roll, a list published by the Irish Voice. The list, an annual effort, honors prominent leaders in American education, especially at the university level, who are of Irish descent.

Honorees from Seton Hall University include Marta Deyrup, Ph.D., University Libraries; Maura Grace Harrington, Ph.D., College of Arts and Sciences; Patrick Hobbs, J.D., LL.M., School of Law; and Christopher O’Brien, Ph.D., LAT, ATC, School of Health and Medical Sciences.

Deyrup serves as the Head of Technical Services of the University Libraries. Her Irish heritage can be traced to her great grandmother who originated from County Roscommon in Ireland. She is the author of five books, including one with fellow honoree Harrington entitled The Irish American Experience in New Jersey and Metropolitan New York: Cultural Identity, Hybridity, and Commemoration.

Harrington is an instructor in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of English. She is the founder and coordinator of the Irish Studies Discussion Series at Seton Hall University, which has brought more than two dozen speakers to campus over the past five years. Since joining the Seton Hall University community in 2001, as a graduate student and teaching assistant, she has gone on to complete her dissertation which analyzed nationalism and religion in the portrayals of the supernatural in magical realist Irish literature written between 1891 and 1916.

Hobbs is the Dean of Seton Hall University’s School of Law. His father, Patrick Hobbs, was a native of County Louth and his mother, Bridget, was from County Meath. Under his leadership, Seton Hall University’s School of Law has achieved worldwide prominence through a series of groundbreaking initiatives, its Health Law program is consistently ranked among the Top 10 in US News and World Report.

O’Brien is Assistant Dean for Special Academic Programs and Projects in the School of Health and Medical Sciences (SHMS) and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Athletic Training. His Irish lineage originates from County Tipperary and County Donegal. He is being recognized for establishing an international affiliation agreement between the SHMS Department of Athletic Training and the Institute of Technology–Carlow in Ireland. This was SHMS’ first international affiliation agreement with an Irish institution and a pioneering program for athletic training students across the United States.
