S.O. Man Arrested in Maplewood Burglary

Nicholas Cardone, 18, of Valley Street, was charged with burglary and theft.

Maplewood police officers responding to an alarm activation at a Pierson Road residence on Thursday, Nov. 26, observed that someone had forced their way in through a basement window. Due to the short timeframe involved, officers contacted the Essex County Sheriff's office, which responded with a K-9 unit and tracked the suspect's scent across the country club golf course before eventually losing it near 747 Valley St.

Detectives at the scene of the crime determined that several pieces of jewelry had been stolen. Shortly after the burglary, information was received from patrol officers pertaining to this crime. Based on this information, detectives were able to determine the identity of the suspect involved. On Friday, Nov. 27, detectives and members of Maplewood's crime suppression team attempted to arrest the suspect at his residence on Valley Street in South Orange; however, officers had just missed him. They were able to catch up to him down the block at another Valley Street address.

Nicholas Cardone, 18, of South Orange, was arrested and charged with burglary and theft. At the time of his arrest, he still had several pieces of the jewelry reported stolen from Pierson Road in his possession. He was taken into custody without incident, held on $25,000 bail, and later transported to the Essex County jail.
