SOPD Crime Alert: Deliverymen Recently Targeted

Two recent incidents involved a bogus order being placed at addresses near the town line.

The South Orange Police Department would like local merchants to be aware of two recent incidents in which food delivery persons were set up for robbery. In both instances, the tactic was to phone in a bogus delivery order to an address close to the town line. When the delivery person arrived, they were met by two males on foot. In one incident, the deliveryman was robbed at gunpoint. Both incidents took place in the evening hours.

Merchants who offer delivery should advise their employees to be cautious, especially when delivering to an unfamiliar address or patron, or when the delivery is being made to an address near the town line. All merchants should obtain a call-back number for any delivery requests and, when possible, get a home telephone number. Merchants are also encouraged to call the police at 973-763-3000, ext. 0 before making any deliveries for calls that have aroused their suspicion.
